For sustainable sourcing, brands need GOTS (organic cotton), OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (substance safety), Cradle to Cradle (circular design), GRS (recycled content), BCI (responsible cotton), and Higg Index (facility performance). MOQ is the minimum volume a manufacturer will produce per run — for denim mills this typically ranges from hundreds to thousands of metres depending on construction and finish. Small and emerging brands often face exclusion from large mills with high MOQ thresholds. Custom denim development typically takes 4–8 weeks from brief to first sample, depending on construction complexity and finish. ADM’s in-house R&D team at the Karachi facility handles custom weight, construction, blend, and wash development — with standard sampling in 2–3 weeks and rush options available for select constructions. ADM’s vertical integration means yarn preparation, weaving, dyeing, and finishing all happen on site, removing inter-factory delays that slow development at non-integrated mills.

Denim’s main impacts are water use in dyeing, chemical use in processing, and carbon from energy-intensive manufacturing. Brands reduce this by sourcing from certified mills using waterless finishing, closed-loop water recycling, and sustainable fibres.
